NYC's main post office stops 24-hour service

NEW YORK Starting May 9, the James A. Farley Post Office will shut its overnight teller service. Around the city, 10 other post office branches will also curtail hours.

Nationally, that leaves only Chicago's main post office open 24 hours a day.

The iconic building will still keep its lobby open all night, with access to post office boxes and automated kiosks for buying stamps and mailing packages.

The Farley's overnight service is an institution, where harried New Yorkers go to mail everything from last-minute tax returns to urgent documents.

With mail volume declining by 9.5 billion pieces last year, the Postal Service has warned it will run out of money without congressional action.
