Yonkers Marine killed in Afghanistan

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII The Marines said Lance Cpl. John J. Malone, 24, died Sept. 24 in Farah province, Afghanistan.

Malone was a machine gunner assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, and deployed to Afghanistan in May.

Malone joined the Marine Corps in February 2007 and reported to 2/3 in June 2007. He previously deployed to Iraq with 2/3 in February 2008. He participated in numerous pre-deployment training exercises on Oahu as well as Lava Viper on the Big Island and Mojave Viper in California prior to each deployment.

His awards include the Purple Heart Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.
