Actress Niecy Nash spoke to nearly 400 people at the annual fundraiser for a Contra Costa agency, called STAND For Families Free of Violence. She talked about the shocking domestic violence in her life.
"When I was 15, I saw my mother get shot. Her boyfriend was very abusive, and he shot my mother with a sawed-off, double-barreled shotgun in front of her children, Easter Sunday morning, shot her down like a dog in the street. Thankfully my mother survived that incident," said Nash.
STAND has the only domestic violence shelter in Contra Costa County. It's in a secret location with 24 apartments. Crisis counselors staff the phones 24-hours a day.
