Durand man drowns in Huron County

PORT AUSTIN The man has been identified as 20-year-old James McComb II.

The sheriff's department says McComb was fishing with a friend from Swartz Creek at the Port Austin Harbor breakwall, and was washed into the water by a wave when he crawled down a ladder to free a snagged net.

McComb's friend got into the water to help him. Both men were overtaken by the cold water, but 20-year-old Chris Hathaway was able to get back to the ladder.

Hathaway was treated at a hospital and released.

The Port Austin Fire Department found McComb at 5:15 Monday night.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital about four hours later.
