Whoopi Goldberg adopts kitten tossed on Verrazano

STATEN ISLAND

The then-5-week-old kitten, named /*Verrazano*/, was throw from a moving car and landed on the busy roadway last month.

Animal Care and Control officer Richard Gentles just happened to be driving on the bridge when he witnessed the heartless act. He says he stopped his car - and with the help of some concerned truck drivers who helped blocked traffic - safely rescued the kitten, which was close to the edge of the bridge.

"He hit the side of the wall," Gentles said. "He's incredibly lucky, this little kitty."

He's even luckier now that he's been adopted by "The View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg.

Animal Care and Control says Goldberg was one of the first of more than 140 people to inquire about the cat.

Goldberg has shortened the kitten's name to Vinny.
