Man shot outside community center and school in Newark

NEWARK

The victim, who was shot in the head, is at the hospital in stable condition.

The shooting, around 3:15 p.m., was outside La Casa de Don Pedro at 202 First St., a community center that houses a pre-kindergarten, which funnels students in the Newark public school system.

Police also discovered that a Camptown school bus had been struck by a bullet as it drove by the area at the time of the shooting. The bus was carrying about six special needs students, between the ages of 13 to 16, two aides and the driver, who were taken to University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as a precaution

The students who attend the center, ages 3 and 4, already had been released. However, students at an afterschool program were about to be released when teachers on the first floor heard shots.

Three or four suspects fled the scene in a black vehicle, traveling west on Sixth Avenue. No arrests have been made.

Detectives are investigating and working to identify a motive and suspect(s).
