Basketball star injured in apparent drive-by shooting in Manhattan
UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A 19-year-old was shot while playing basketball on the Upper West Side Monday night, and a massive search is now underway for the gunman.
The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. at the Amsterdam Houses on West 64th Street, where Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said an annual basketball tournament was taking place.
"There were two shots fired," Brewer said. "I think somebody got hit and then somebody ran down. Not from this neighborhood."
The victim, 19-year-old Jaylin Anderson, told police he was playing basketball when he suddenly felt pain.
He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He is expected to make a full recovery.
He told Eyewitness News he feels incredibly lucky.
"I'm happy," he said. "I'm just happy that I'm alive and it didn't hit anything else -- an artery, or a vital organ."
Investigators believe Anderson was not the intended target. But he was one of eight people shot in separate incidents on Monday -- and one man was killed.
Brewer said she has been attending the tournament for several years and that there were many players and children in the area at the time of the shooting.
Residents of the complex asked not to be identified but said this is becoming common. They say police patrols were once common but not lately -- and they hope that will change.
Police have made no arrests.
