BRONX, New York City (WABC) -- A woman believed to be an innocent bystander was struck by a stray bullet in the Bronx Wednesday morning.

It happened just after 8 a.m. on Williamsbridge Road in the Allerton section, outside the Pelham Parkway Houses.

Authorities say the 39-year-old woman was walking to work when she observed two males shooting at each other before she was struck in the left forearm.

"Once I hear the lady screaming, 'I got shot, I got shot, I got shot,' that's when I knew something was completely wrong," one witness said.

Good Samaritans brought a chair for her to sit on and used a belt as a tourniquet.

Another bullet went through the windshield of a car parking on the street. Shell casings littered the sidewalk.

The victim was taken to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition.

The shooting happened across the street from a popular playground, but no children were hurt.

"There was a man running, and I heard 'pop, pop,'" another witness said. "Then more people started screaming."

Witnesses say as many as a half dozen shots were fired by the suspect, who was wearing a ski mask and a hoodie.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the NYCHA complex as they continue to search for the gunman.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
