INWOOD, New York (WABC) -- Police have arrested a teenager after an elderly man was brutally beaten with a cane in an apparent random attack in Inwood.

19-year-old Saul Nunez of the Bronx was arrested Saturday and charged with two counts of assault as well as criminal possession of a weapon.

Around 6 p.m. Friday, in the 4800 block of Broadway, police say Nunez approached the 90-year-old man, kicked his shopping cart and struck him on the side of the head with a cane.

According to the NYPD, the unprovoked assault left the victim with cuts on his ear and head. Good Samaritans intervened and stopped the assault.

A Good Samaritan rushed to the rescue of a man being attacked in Inwood.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was serious but stable.
