2 killed, 4 hurt when out-of-control car slams into utility poles in Connecticut
STAMFORD, Connecticut (WABC) -- Two people were killed and four other suffered injuries when a driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole in Connecticut Monday morning.
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Canal and Henry streets in Stamford.
Police believe speed to be a main factor in the crash.
There were three men and three women in the car, and the fatalities were identified as 19-year-old Kymoni Pollack and 18-year-old NiShawn Tolliver.
Pollack was pronounced dead at the scene, while Tolliver died at the hospital.
"My friend's brother knew the passenger, which was his brother that died," area resident Rene Santiago said. "He was crying. He just couldn't believe it."
Police say the vehicle, driven by 18-year-old Jerry Diaz, was traveling southbound on Canal and at some point started sliding sideways before hitting one pole. It cut that pole into two separate pieces that came down on the sidewalk before crashing into a second pole, splitting that one in half and coming to rest against it.
"Right now, it's just reckless operation of a motor vehicle that unfortunately resulted in the death of two young lives," Stamford police Sergeant Jeffrey Booth said. "There's no, it doesn't make a lot of sense right now."
Diaz and 19-year-old Amaiya Callahan are listed in critical condition, while the remaining two passengers -- 19-year-old Erica Stephens and 20-year-old Alontia Moore are in serious condition.
"Imagine the speed that they could be traveling to take one pole out, came here at such a short distance, you can just imagine the speed that they were traveling," area resident Lenroy Collins said. "It's just unimaginable."
The investigation is ongoing, and there are road closures in the area south of I-95.
