Coney Island beaches to reopen after shark sighting reported

CONEY ISLAND, New York (WABC) -- Beaches will reopen Wednesday after a possible shark was reported in the ocean off Coney Island Tuesday morning.

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation was investigating reports of both sharks and stingrays in the water, but did not confirm the presence of either.

The section between 10th and 16th streets closed several times between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and people were pulled out of the water when the sightings happened.

Out of an abundance of caution, officials had closed certain stretches of beaches to swimmers.

An NYPD helicopter was hovering over the ocean around noon looking for a possible shark.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the Coney Island Aquarium, issued the following statement:

"Today's reported shark sightings off Coney Island are a reminder that New York City and its waterways are home to fascinating marine wildlife. A vast ocean wilderness literally laps against the city's shores, and we share these waters with whales, seals, sea turtles, and yes, sometimes sharks. We agree with the decision by New York City's Department of Parks and Recreation to close beaches out of an abundance of caution and respect for these animals. As people watch from shore we hope they will remember that sightings like these are opportunities for all New Yorkers to appreciate the wonder, beauty, and diversity of the ocean."
