Pregnant woman killed, 2 hurt in wrong-way crash on Long Island

MANHASSET, Long Island (WABC) -- One person was killed and two others injured in a wrong-way crash on Long Island Sunday afternoon.

Police say a vehicle was traveling the wrong way down the south service road of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 34 in North Hills when it crashed just after 3:30 p.m.

The victims were taken to North Shore University Hospital, where Demytrya Gibbs was pronounced dead. Gibbs, who was six months pregnant, was in the front seat. Her unborn child did not survive.

Authorities say the driver, identified as 28-year-old Courtney Corbett, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, is under arrest and charged with second-degree manslaughter and assault. Gibbs was apparently his girlfriend.

According to court papers, Corbett was fleeing a larceny involving a stolen credit card at Sephora and drove the wrong way on an LIE exit ramp. A brief police pursuit had been called off just prior to the accident.

"As the officer continued to attempt to stop the vehicle, the subject's actions became more reckless," Nassau County police Homicide Squad Detective Lieutenant Stephen Fitzpatrick. "He subsequently made a right turn onto the south service road of the LIE heading into oncoming traffic. At that point, this officer disengaged and discontinued trying to stop this vehicle."

Khadisha Greene was in the back seat and was also injured, as was the other driver involved in the crash, identified as Yin Fong.
