Lawmakers on Long Island move to restrict drone flights

BELLPORT (WABC) -- As drone technology takes-off, many of the rules about how and where to use them remain up in the air.

Lawmakers in Suffolk County have begun the discussion with a bill that just cleared committee. The measure would restrict drones and all un-manned aerial vehicles with cameras at county parks and facilities unless authorized by the particular department overseeing the property.

"Those who want to use drones for recreational use, we are not trying to prohibit them of doing that. But, still, the fact that drones can carry objects to me there is a significant public safety issue," Suffolk County Legislator Dr. William Spencer said.

And a privacy issue, but drone enthusiasts remain concerned about the murkiness behind any new law.

That is might a complete ban become inevitable? Right now, members of New York City Council are proposing one.

"Too ban it completely seems to be a little bit over-the-top," Nick Miceli, Long Island Aero-Radio Society, said.

According to the proposed law, violators could be fined between $250 and $500, but the law does not apply to government agencies. That is, police and fire departments could still use the drones with cameras...

The co-sponsor of the legislation admits this is only the beginning. This first proposal comes up for a vote before the full legislature next Tuesday.
