AMITYVILLE (WABC) -- Authorities say a fence company who was contracted by a Long Island school district found an unloaded gun near the edge of a middle school's grounds Monday morning.
The incident happened at the Edmund W. Miles Middle School on Broadway in Amityville.
A crew was excavating a path for the fence at the edge of the property in the back of the school when a worker noticed the handgun.
Police recovered the weapon and found that it was not loaded.
As a precaution, canine and aviation units were searching the area.
