ELIZABETH (WABC) -- Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that ripped through a building in Elizabeth.

The 4-alarm blaze broke out just before 9 p.m. Saturday at a 2-story building at 1086 Elizabeth Avenue.

The building had a business on the first floor and apartments on the second. The flames also spread to neighboring buildings.

Several firefighters were targeting hotspots on the scene where plumes of smoke were coming from.

One eyewitness said he heard an explosion before the fire broke out.

Dozens of firefighters responded to the scene and combated the fire from every direction. People who live nearby say the businesses affected range from a gold exchange job to a beauty salon.

No one was injured. The people who live in the apartments above where the flames broke escaped safely across the street.
