Garbage truck crashes into building in Yonkers

YONKERS, New York (WABC) -- A City of Yonkers garbage truck crashed into a building Monday night, after the driver apparently suffered a medical condition.

"I just heard a loud noise and when I went outside, it looked like it was from the movies," an eyewitness said.

On one of the busiest streets in Yonkers, a garbage truck was on a collision course.

There was chaos just after 8 p.m. Monday night. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano says the city worker at the wheel suffered a medical condition and hurtled off Nepperhan Avenue.

"He may have had a seizure or something, we're not sure," Spano said.

He crashed into a small building that houses the dispatch for Yonkers Union Car Service.

There was a fuel leak and the sanitation worker was trapped inside the truck and needed to be extricated.

"The complete dispatch area, all completely destroyed, can't do anything with it. We can't have 60 people out of work," said Bianca Rodriguez, Owner of Yonkers Union Car Service.

After 10 p.m., a wrecking crew delicately towed the massive vehicle away from the building.

City inspectors are still evaluating its structural integrity. But as far as the mayor is concerned, it was pure luck that it wasn't worse.

"Everything else here can be replaced. That building can be replaced, that garbage truck we got another 13 to back that up. So you know what, all we care about is that his life and the lives of the people in this city are okay," Spano said.

The driver is being observed at Jacobi Medical Center.
