Long Island officials unveil state's 1st pink hotel room dedicated to fighting breast cancer

STONY BROOK (WABC) -- Officials on Long Island on Thursday unveiled New York state's first pink hotel room dedicated to fighting breast cancer.

New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association Chairman John Tsunis and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, along with Long Island breast cancer groups and survivors, at the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook.

The luxury room, complete with of pink decor and artwork, was specially created by a local interior designer in honor of those struggling with breast cancer on Long Island.

Beginning this month, the redesigned room, one of 143 in the hotel, will be available for guests to book all year.

A portion of the proceeds from every stay will be donated to three local not-for-profit breast cancer organizations, Fortunato Breast Health Center, Carol Baldwin Breast Health Center and Stony Brook University Cancer Center.

Each year, one in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer. The rates on Long Island are estimated to be even higher.

The Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook's pink hotel room will be used to battle these numbers even after Breast Cancer Awareness Month has ended.
