CONEY ISLAND (WABC) -- Hundreds of intrepid people took the plunge into the icy waters off Coney Island New Year's Day to benefit a good cause.
The 'Polar Bear' swimmers braved the surf in the frigid waters to raise money for Camp Sunshine in Maine.
It provides a free experience for children dealing with life-threatening illnesses and their families.
Participants were asked to make a $20 donation to Camp Sunshine.
Anyone who gave $100 or more got a catchy 'Freezing for a Reason: I Did It" t-shirt.
Members of the Coney Island Polar Beach Club have kept the tradition alive since 1903.
