Hoboken gets new pumps to help fight flooding

HOBOKEN, New Jersey (WABC) -- New pumps designed to combat flooding in Hoboken were lowered into the ground Friday.

The city and the North Hudson Sewerage Authority are working together to add an underground pump station. The pumps are expected to be operational in August.

They are designed to alleviate chronic flooding in northwest Hoboken between Ninth and 13th streets. The station will have a total pumping capacity of 80 million gallons per day.

"I am excited that this project is on track to be operational by the end of the summer as part of a comprehensive flood resiliency plan to protect Hoboken from all types of flooding," Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said.

The two pumps were secured, but the station will be completed in September or October.

The city mostly funded the project, and the NHSA designed and built it. The NHSA also will operate and maintain the pump station.
