Dead humpback whale washes up on Fire Island

FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. (WABC) -- A dead humpback whale washed up on Fire Island in Davis Park Monday evening.

Calls came in from members of the public around 8:30 p.m. to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

Suffolk County Police and Fire Island National Seashore were contacted to alert them of the situation.

A team headed to the site on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. with Brookhaven Town to take initial measurements and determine a necropsy plan for the whale.

The whale is a male juvenile, and is approximately 28 feet in length.

There are no signs of external trauma.

Photos of the fluke were taken to possibly help identify this particular whale, but whether or not they can identify the whale at this age is unsure as of now.

The necropsy, which will determine cause of death and any possible identifiers, will take place on the morning of Wednesday, July 1 around 9:30 a.m.

Because there aren't any signs of external trauma, a broad scope of samples will be taken to help determine the cause of death.
