NEW YORK -- New York's 50th Israel Day Parade up Fifth Avenue featured some participants high up in the air: 16 planes in a flyover salute.
The annual festivity on Sunday honoring Israel also included a model of an Israel spacecraft.
Among the 35,000 marchers were New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Israeli diplomats and members of the Knesset, Israel's parliament.
However, there were some discordant notes amid the boisterous feast of floats, music and dancing.
Anti-gay Orthodox Jews lined up behind police barricades to voice their opposition to same-sex marriage. And some parade participants marched to oppose the purchase of Israeli products made by Jewish settlers in the West Bank. A group of spectators hoisted signs that read "Jews don't boycott Jews."
