Seven hurt in Jackson Heights fire in Queens

JACKSON HEIGHTS, Queens (WABC) -- A fire that burned through a three-story home in Jackson Heights Saturday morning, injuring several people, was brought under control.

Firefighters responded to 69-12 31 Ave., an attached apartment building, around 6:40 a.m. It appears to have started on the first floor.

Five people suffered minor injuries related to smoke inhalation and were taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

Two others were critically injured; an elderly woman with Alzheimer's and her health aide were on the first floor of the building at the time of the fire. The two women were taken out of the home not breathing and brought to New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The woman's husband, who is in his 90s, lives on the second floor.

A family with two adults and two children, were living in an upper floor apartment was rescued by firefighters through the rear of the building.

About 60 firefighters and 12 fire units responded.

The fire was under control by 7:40 a.m. The cause is unknown.
