Dozens evacuate in Jersey City after fire sparked by garbage truck
MIchelle Charlesworth reports on the fire that spread to cars and a nearby building.

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- At least 50 people had to evacuate their apartments in Jersey City overnight, after a fast-moving fire that began in a garbage truck.

The truck erupted into a fireball, with flames quickly spreading to cars and a building nearby.

Several cars went up in flames on Palisades Avenue after their gas tanks exploded, and even the sidewalk caught fire.

Dozens of residents were able to evacuate their apartments safely, and most were able to return by 5 a.m.

Some residents had no fire escapes, so they ran out the front door after hearing the explosions.

So far there are no reports of any injuries, but the garbage truck and at least three cars were destroyed.

The fire is believed to have been sparked by an electrical problem in the truck.
