Eric Adams drops out of New York City mayoral race

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The election for New York City mayor is less than two months away and the candidates are working hard to get their message out to voters as the clock ticks closer to Election Day.

Frontrunner and Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa are making campaign appearances and headlines regularly as November 4 nears.

In a video message posted to social media on Sunday, Adams announced he is ending his reelection campaign and dropping out of the New York City mayoral race. You can listen to part of his message in the media player above.

Eric Adams drops out of New York City mayoral race

Eric Adams has announced that he is ending his reelection campaign and dropping out of the New York City mayoral race on Sunday.

In a video released on social media, Adams spoke with pride about his achievements as mayor, including a drop in violent crime. But he said that "constant media speculation" about his future and a decision by the city's campaign finance board to withhold public funding from his reelection effort, made it impossible to stay in the race.

Mayor Adams insists he is not dropping out of the race

On Thursday Mayor Eric Adams took questions from reporters for the first time since last week.

He also hasn't publicly campaigned for reelection in five days, fueling speculation once again that he might drop out amid dismal polling numbers.

But Adams insisted that is not the case and he has been meeting with supporters and raising money behind the scenes.

Harris calls Mamdani after lukewarm endorsement

After a lukewarm endorsement, former Vice President Kamala Harris is once against showing her support for Zohran Mamdani.

Harris reached out to him in a private call on Wednesday and Mamdani said they spoke for about 10 minutes.

Harris told him while they don't agree on everything, he needs to succeed for New York to succeed.

There are no plans for a joint appearance.
