The Countdown: Candidates for NYC mayor, NJ governor make final case to voters

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Election Day is Tuesday and the candidates are working hard to get their message out to voters.

In New York City, all eyes are on the race for mayor as frontrunner and Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa are making campaign appearances and headlines regularly.

Meanwhile, the race for the governor of New Jersey is heating up between Mikie Sherrill and Jack Ciattarelli.

What are the 6 NYC ballot measures?

In addition to voting for the next mayor of New York City, voters will also answer six ballot questions when they head to the polls for the 2025 election.

The first measure would change the New York State Constitution, which requires statewide approval, while proposals 2-6 are suggested by the 2025 Charter Revision Commission after the charter held public hearings and considered public input.

Gov. Phil Murphy votes early

Gov. Phil Murphy took advantage of early voting on Monday and cast his ballot in Monmouth County.

After eight years in office, he voted for his replacement.

And it's no surprise that the outgoing governor has endorsed fellow Democrat Mikie Sherrill over Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

Early voting in New Jersey runs through Sunday.

Former Gov. David Paterson speaks out on NYC mayoral race

Former Gov. David Paterson spoke out Monday about the race for New York City mayor.

He cited "the incredible record turnout of people over the weekend" as proof people understand next week's mayor election is "probably the most defining election this city will ever go through."

Paterson also called for Curtis Sliwa to step aside and said a vote for Sliwa will inadvertently result in Zohran Mamdani getting elected.

Paterson said Mamdani supporters "are historic in the way they have mistreated the Black community over and over and over again."

A spokesperson for Paterson said despite the former governor's statements Monday morning seemingly endorsing Cuomo, he has not made yet made his latest officialendorsement.

Day 3 of early voting begins in NYC; over 164,000 votes estimated so far

A third day of early voting is now underway, with candidates planning campaign stops and interviews in the last full week before Election Day.

Early voting turnout over the weekend was higher than it has been in the last four years, with over 164,000 voters turning out to cast their ballots according to a Dept. of Elections estimate.

Crystal Cranmore reports.

On Sunday evening, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani spoke to a crowd of over 10,000 people at Forest Hill Stadium in Queens, focusing on universal childcare. NY Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were among the Democrats who joined the rally.

Also on Sunday, Republican Curtis Sliwa attended a Halloween festival, spoke at the "City of Yes" press conference and campaigned in Bay Ridge and Washington Heights.

Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo meet with Brooklyn leaders and held a rally at Queens Public Library in Kew Garden Hills after netting an endorsement from New York Daily News earlier Sunday morning.
