Four vehicles were involved in the accident that left one person dead on the Long Island Expressway in Queens on Thursday afternoon.

QUEENS, New York City (WABC) -- Authorities are investigating what led to a deadly multi-vehicle crash on the Long Island Expressway in Queens on Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened at 1:25 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near Exit 17.

One of the vehicles flipped over the center divider. It landed in the westbound lanes where it was struck by four other vehicles.

Officials said the driver of that vehicle, a 67-year-old man, died in the crash. He may have had a medical episode, investigators said.

There were a total of six people injured in the other four vehicles. Two of those people refused medical attention and the other four were said to be stable.

Police said 50-year-old George Conroy was taken into custody at the scene on a charge of aggravated unlicensed operator.

Traffic was backed up in the area for several hours.
