NYPD rescues red-tailed hawk in Midtown

MIDTOWN (WABC) -- The NYPD rescued a red-tailed hawk in Midtown Wednesday morning.

Police were called to West 57th and 6th Avenue at 9:15 a.m. when they discovered a disoriented red-tailed hawk on the sidewalk.

Members from EDU Truck 1 covered the hawk in a blanket and put it in a secured cage.

It was transported to the Wild Bird Fund on the Upper West Side for treatment.

The NYC Audubon Society says red-tailed hawks are not uncommon in the city, with the most famous one being Pale Male, who has resided on 5th Avenue in Midtown since 1991: http://www.nycaudubon.org/red-tailed-hawks-in-nyc
