Elderly man killed in Mount Vernon building fire

One person killed in Mount Vernon fire

MOUNT VERNON, New York (WABC) -- A fire turned deadly when flames ripped through an apartment building in Mount Vernon on Saturday.

Fire officials say crews quickly responded after the call came in around 6 p.m.

The blaze started on the fourth floor of the building on South Columbus Avenue. The person who died was an elderly man. Everyone else was able to get out of the building safely.

The Red Cross was on the scene to help two families who were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
