MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (WABC) -- Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting that left a suspect injured in Mount Vernon Friday morning.

According to a statement from Special Assistant to the Mount Vernon Mayor Shari Harris, the suspect attacked officers who were responding to a report of an emotionally disturbed man outside 158 Steven Ave.

The suspect barricaded himself inside after police arrived, and then attacked officers with a knife and scissors when they tried to enter, the statement said. "Attempts to subdue the attacker with taser and pepper spray failed and the attacker was shot."

The suspect is in the hospital with serious injuries. The officer who fired was not hurt, but the second officer did suffer an apparent injury.

A neighbor told Eyewitness News that police had tried for an hour to remove the suspect from the house.
