HASBROUCK HEIGHTS (WABC) -- A mother and her adult son were stabbed inside their Hasbrouck Heights apartment, and the suspect is believed to be her homeless ex-boyfriend.

Police say 41-year-old Jonathan Bell fled the scene in a gray 2007 Volkswagen GTI. Authorities are now searching for him.

He is believed to have broken into the Church Street apartment through a first-floor window at 1:30 a.m.

Sources say the suspect and the female victim have children together.

He allegedly stabbed the 20-year-old son, who is not his, after a confrontation. Police say he then stabbed the 40-year-old mother.

The son's biological father was also in the apartment and fended the suspect off.

Both victims were hospitalized in stable condition. They suffered lacerations to the head, and the woman also had a stab wound to her arm.

Bell's last known address was in Lodi.
