Tornado confirmed in New Jersey; local high school damaged
STANHOPE, New Jersey (WABC) -- The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF1 tornado did touch down in Sussex County, New Jersey, Tuesday night.
The NWS says the tornado had winds between 86-110 MPH, causing damage between Stanhope and Hopatcong.
Stanhope was hit hard. According to Mayor Rosemary Maio, a transformer blew, and there were a lot of trees and wires down.
Maio drove around with Boro Administrator Brian McNeilly to survey the damage.
"There are areas where trees are on the wire as well as those where the wires are smoking, and hopefully aren't going to catch fire," she said.
Many lines were still dangling off the power poles Wednesday and a number of homes were damaged by falling trees.
Lenape Valley Regional High School was closed Wednesday after the storm damaged its facade and ripped up a dugout from its athletic field.
NewsCopter 7 also flew over nearby Hopatcong, where additional damage could be seen.
The town experienced fallen trees, downed power lines and other damage.
