JAMAICA, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police have arrested and charged a burglary suspect who was shot by police after they responded to a woman screaming for help in her Queens home Monday.
Leighton Friday, 19, of Queens, N.Y., was charged with two counts of burglary, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
Police said officers rushed to a home on 142nd Street after receiving a 911 call just after 1:10 p.m. Monday. They apparently went in through a back door and encountered the burglary suspect still inside the home.
Authorities said the man struck one of the officers in the head with a crowbar, then two officers fired at him, striking him the left wrist and left thigh.
Friday, who reportedly has a long criminal history and is well-known to police, was taken to Jamaica Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The officer was also being treated and is listed in stable condition.
