NEWARK (WABC) -- An entire block in Newark was evacuated Monday after a contractor putting in curbing struck a gas main.
The workers were digging up the curb outside a commercial building on Broadway between Crane and Clark streets when they hit the 24-inch main.
PSE&G is on the scene, evacuating nearby businesses and residences as a precaution. The block is made up of mixed-use properties, mostly commercial stores on the first floors with apartments above.
Crews assessed the damage and began repairs.
The road remains shut down, and there is no estimate for when repairs will be completed.
