8-year-old boy with special needs critically injured inside Queens school

8-year-old boy critically injured at school in Queens

FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens (WABC) -- An 8-year-old boy with special needs is fighting for his life after being critically injured inside his Queens school.



It happened at P.S. 253 in Far Rockaway around 11 a.m.



A 911 call from school was placed Wednesday morning for an injured child.



When EMS arrived, they found 8-year-old Daniel Martinez unconscious.



He was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center.



Martinez has a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage.



Police were not notified by school officials of the incident.



There is an active police investigation underway.



The Department of Education released a statement saying:



"This is an extremely troubling incident, and the principal and school staff have been providing the family with ongoing supports during this difficult time. We are looking into what transpired and will ensure that it is swiftly addressed."
