BRIGHTON BEACH (WABC) -- An arrest was made Friday after a woman was shot and wounded near P.S. 253 in Brighton Beach.

19-year-old Christian Hylton was arrested and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The shooting happened just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brighton Sixth Street and Ocean View Avenue in the Brooklyn neighborhood, where two groups of teens got into a fight and shots were fired. The shooting happened near the Magnet School of Multicultural Humanities as students were being dismissed.

A 34-year-old woman was shot in the arm and was taken to Lutheran Medical Center in stable condition. Witnesses said the woman was picking up her child from either the elementary school or a nearby daycare.

The elementary school and nearby Grady High School were temporarily placed on a shelter-in and everyone who was still inside was kept inside.

The shelter-in was subsequently lifted and all students were dismissed. The Department of Education said "student safety and security is our top priority."
