Elderly woman's wheelchair stolen from in front of Staten Island home

GRANITEVILLE, Staten Island (WABC) -- An elderly woman's wheelchair was stolen on Staten Island.

Sandra Prather's electric wheelchair is her lifeline to the outside world, her only way to get to the store or medical appointments, and now it's gone.

"I just had bypass surgery I need the chair to get back-and-forth to our doctors, to go grocery shopping, you know the things to make you feel normal," Prather said.

The 70-year-old had quadruple bypass heart surgery last month.

Her 47-year-old daughter also uses the wheelchair because she suffered two strokes.

Danise Resto says she left the wheelchair outside their home on Regis Drive in Graniteville Sunday around 10:30 p.m.

"We have a makeshift ramp, so I went to set it up, but I went into the bathroom first and I came out 10 minutes later and then chair was gone," Resto said.

Prather says it is a safe neighborhood, she been there for more than 40 years.

People often leave bikes and strollers outside their homes without a problem.

Wednesday night detectives went door-to-door, talking to neighbors and looking for surveillance video.

A neighbor across the street showed Eyewitness News that her cameras didn't capture the culprit.

The family does not have homeowners insurance to pay for the $3,500 wheelchair and Medicare says they won't be eligible for a replacement for another five years.

So they started a GoFundMe account, but are really hoping the thief will return their wheelchair.

"Please just bring my chair back. We don't want any charges. Just leave it at the corner," Resto said.

"Just tell me where it is, we'll go get it," Prather said.
