Rockefeller tree lighting to close streets in Midtown

MIDTOWN, New York (WABC) -- Extra security will be on hand when the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lights up Midtown Manhattan Wednesday night.

The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

Crowds will notice more police officers than in previous years, although there is no specific threat, according to the New York City Police Department.

Umbrellas, backpacks and large bags are prohibited.

Streets also will be closed.

Between Fifth and Sixth avenues, 48th through 51st streets will be closed starting at 3 p.m. until the end of the ceremony.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
