More than 100 left homeless after Bridgeport condo fire

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut -- Bridgeport officials say a fire at a condominium building left more than 100 people homeless and sent a resident and firefighter to a hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the four-story, 36-unit building on Charles Street shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday. One resident was rescued from the third floor and taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation. A firefighter also was treated for minor injuries.

Fire officials say everyone in the building got out safely.

Authorities say a car fire spread to other vehicles in a basement garage, then spread to the building. The cause is under investigation.

Part of the structure collapsed, and an emergency demolition was expected.

A temporary shelter for the displaced residents was set up at a nearby school.
