Woman, 87, killed in fire in apartment on Lower East Side of Manhattan

LOWER EAST SIDE (WABC) -- An elderly woman was killed in an overnight fire on the Lower East Side.

Authorities say the blaze broke out just before 1 a.m. in an apartment at 345 Madison Street.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, but an 87 year old woman in the apartment was taken by EMS to Cornell Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Fire Marshal will determine the cause of the fire and the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The woman's identity has not yet been released.
