Shots fired into home in Norwalk; Not believed to be targeted

NORWALK, Connecticut (WABC) -- Norwalk police are investigating after shots were fired into a home on Woodlawn Avenue at 12:43 a.m. Monday.

Authorities do not believe the family was targeted, but they are putting a big effort into finding the shooter.

Crime scene investigators spent the day at the scene where several gunshots pierced the windows and siding of the two-family house.

"This doesn't happen very often in Norwalk, these types of instances," public information officer Lieutenant Terrence Blake said. "So we are investigating and putting all resources into it."

The family was at home at the time, but luckily, no one was injured.

Neighbor Elmer Mejia remembered hearing the shots.

"The gun is boom, boom, maybe three, four, five times," he said.

Police are not sure of the motive for the shooting.

"At this time, it appears that it's random," Blake said. "The folks in there don't appear to be targeted in this incident. It may very well have been an incident occurring in the street, and the backdrop, unfortunately, was their house."

That was not a comfort to neighbors, however.

"Now that this happened, I think it just puts everybody on edge," neighbor Jennifer Skarupa said. "You can't even let your kids out of the house, because you don't know who is walking around in the neighborhood. It's just a scary world out there."

Neighbors say the street in generally quiet, but that it is sometimes used as a cut through. And what most bothers Skarupa, who regularly walks her dog, is the random nature of the gunfire and that a family doesn't seem safe in their own home.
