NEW YORK -- Most of New York City's curbside recyclables are handled by the Sunset Park Materials Recovery Facility.
Able to process up to 1000 tons of recyclables daily, the facility can sort and recycle all of the city's recycled glass, metal, and plastic. It is the first such center in New York City capable of doing so.
In addition to allowing for the recycling of the city's materials, the center is environmentally-friendly in other ways. Built on the waterfront, recyclables can arrive at the center via barge, which eliminates 150,000 truck trips per year.
The facility also helps educate the public on how to be more environmentally-friendly as it is open to the public and provides tours to schools.
