Double lung transplant recipient starts 'Oomph for Mets' campaign

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The Mets may be down two games, but all hope is not lost. They just have to win two games at Citi Field to get back on track.

That's why one die hard fan started a campaign to help give the team a little "oomph".

Social media gave her "oomph" when she needed a double lung transplant and now, she wants to pass it on to her favorite team.

"I wanted to send them extra oomph especially now, they're down by two," said Starck Monte.

It's how Katy is showing her support for the Mets. It may seem unusual until you're reminded of who she is and what all this talk about "oomph" is about.

"I figured why not? I don't know if it will help at all, but I know the oomphs really helped when I was really struggling," Starck Monte said.

The Mets were there for Katy when she needed support.

The players posted pictures as part of a social media campaign to keep her spirits up.

When Eyewitness News met Katy, she suffers from cystic fibrosis; she was waiting for a set of lungs in what would be her second double lung transplant.

People all over the world rallied, and the images helped her hang on.

About a month later, a match was found. Eyewitness News was there as Katy walked out of the hospital with her husband Joe, a New York City firefighter.

"At this point last year, I really didn't think I was going to be here any longer, I was preparing for death and now I'm living life probably healthier and more active than I have in years," Starck Monte said.

She's been traveling, hanging out with family and friends, and spreading awareness about organ donation. She even did this year's "Tunnel to Towers 5K" and is back on the job in the neo natal intensive care unit at Flushing Hospital.

"I am fully back to life, back to work, back to being a wife and cleaning the house and doing normal things," Starck Monte said.

Like rooting for the Mets, her dog Chloe is also on board.

"Hopefully they can get all the love and support they want, and being a fan I wanted to do whatever I could," Starck Monte said.
