SOUTHOLD, N.Y. -- The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a paraglider who was reported down near Robins Island in the Peconic Bay.

The report came in about the paraglider at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. A family of four was on a back deck around and saw the paraglider come down in the water around Robins Island.

United States Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews, along with the North Sea Fire Department, Southampton Bay constables and Suffolk police aviation unit, were involved in the search. They have done 12 searches so far.

Nothing turned up in their search, which lasted more than 16 hours. The Coast Guard said there were no reports of a missing person and no signs of distress in the area.

The USCG urges mariners to file a float plan, letting a friend or family member know where they're going on the water and when they're planning to return. Mariners should also label recreational equipment in the event something happens.
