LAKEWOOD, N.J. (WABC) -- A car crashed into three pedestrians walking along Route 9 in New Jersey, seriously injuring two children.

Around 10 p.m. Monday at River Avenue (Route 9) and Edgewood Court in Lakewood, the driver of the Lincoln Town car struck the pedestrians.

A 1-year-old child in the stroller and another child, 4-years-old, walking with her were both seriously injured and being treated at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The 27-year-old mother was also hit and is stable, while her children remain critical. She sustained a facial laceration while both children sustained serious head injuries.

The driver of the 1998 Lincoln Towncar, a 50-year-old Toms River man, was traveling north at the time of the accident. was taken to a nearby hospital, but was not seriously hurt. He was interviewed by police but no charges were immediately filed.

The vehicle remained at the scene and the investigation is ongoing by Lakewood Township Police.

Route 9 was closed between Central Avenue and Pine Street for four hours for the investigation.
