Residual delays at Penn Station due to Amtrak switch problem

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Penn Station train travelers experienced another rough commute home after delays and cancellations were reported Tuesday.

Officials said there was an Amtrak switch problem, affecting LIRR, NJ Transit and Amtrak service. At least five trains were canceled, but it appears that the situation is clearing up.

The delays and cancellations were affecting train traffic in and out of New York Penn Station.

Amtrak issued this statement:

"Amtrak engineering crews are working to fix a switch issue on the east end of NY Penn Station. This is mainly affecting Amtrak and NJ Transit trains going east. Passengers can expect delays through rush hour.
Amtrak apologizes for the inconvenience."

As of 6:45 p.m., the LIRR said its trains are running close to normal service, with up to 15-minute delays in some areas east of Jamaica.

This issue comes after a series of issues at Penn Station that have snarled morning and evening commutes over the last several weeks.
