A dog that was hit by a car and left to die in the middle of the road in Redlands was rescued by three good Samaritans.

REDLANDS, Calif. -- Three good Samaritans rescued a dog that was hit by a car and left to die in the middle of the road in Redlands.

Suzanne Grande's daughter spotted the 2-year-old mastiff on her way to school Thursday morning and immediately called her mother.

"She calls me a little before 10 in the morning and says, 'Mom, there is a dog in street. She's bleeding. I can't leave her. Can you come do something?'" Grande said.

Suzanne Grande jumped into action, searching the internet for a local veterinarian close to the accident scene.

At the same time, Daniel Fenesan and Jody Hitchman pulled over to help Grande's daughter with the dog.

"I just went and I just looked and tried to sit with her to see if I could help her," Fenesan said.

The trio brought the ailing animal to Redlands Animal Hospital. She suffered a broken pelvis and jaw, cracked ribs and bruised lungs, but is expected to recover.

At the time, if no owner came forward to claim her, the dog would have been euthanized.

"It just didn't feel like the right thing to do," Grande said.

The three good Samaritans stepped in to claim the dog and nicknamed her Lucky.

"We are going to rehabilitate her and try to get her moving," Fenesan said.

Grande's husband has set up a GoFundMe website to pay for Lucky's medical care.

"We are trying to do the right thing for this animal and we are hoping the owner shows up," Jeff Grande said.

Lucky did not have a tag or micro-chip, but was wearing a collar and appeared to have been well cared for.
