EAST NEW YORK (WABC) -- An NYPD police horse is recovering after being attacked by a pit bull in Brooklyn Wednesday.

Officer Luis Ramos and his horse Pompey II were en-route to the 75th Precinct on Sutter Avenue in East New York.

In the vicinity of Essex Street, police say the pit-bull charged at Pompey II, biting the stallion in the right chest area and his inner left leg, causing puncture wounds and abrasions.

A second mounted officer, Laurene Bove, witnessed the dog attack and came to help with her horse Limerick, causing the dog to retreat back into a yard at 490 Essex Street.

The owner of the pit-bull was located and was able to secure the dog without incident.

The pit-bull was then taken to the Center for Animal Care and Control in Brooklyn pending further investigation.

Pompey II was taken back to the Troop E stable where his injuries will be treated by a veterinarian.

The horse is expected to fully recover after a few days rest, and the NYPD adds that he will also receive a few extra apples and carrots.
