BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (WABC) -- The Ocean County Prosecutor's office is investigating a police-involved shooting in Brick Township, New Jersey, late Sunday.
Police were dispatched to Cherry Wood Circle at about 10:50 p.m. following a 901 call from a man who stated he was going to create a disturbance. He then immediately hung up, authorities say.
According to county prosecutor Joseph Coronato, officers were confronted by a man approaching them from the residence with what appeared to be a black semi-automatic hand gun.
After the man failed to comply with the officer's orders to drop the weapon, they discharged their duty weapons. He was struck several times and died at the scene.
It was later determined that the weapon was not real.
According to one source, the man who police shot and killed was very intoxicated and had locked a female friend inside of a room in the house before coming outside.
The investigation is continuing.
The man's identity has not yet been released as authorities try to contact his family.
