FRANKLIN, N.J. (WABC) -- From the mayor, to hundreds of cops across the state, many called for Council Member David Fanale to step down.

This after Fanale posted insulting comments about cops and even about the police chief's wife.

Wednesday they got their wish, he resigned.

"We don't have room for hate in this town," a resident said.

Several hundred residents along with law enforcement from across the state were calling for the head of a council member they elected on Tuesday night.

"We're mad and we're not going have it," another resident said.

"He's come to a point of disrespecting fallen officers. I don't know how much lower you can get," another person said.

It isn't clear where it all went south with David Fanale and the town he's supposed to serve. But it led to a series of public diatribes on his public Facebook page against the Franklin Police.

One featured a profane insult about the chief's wife and a picture of a cartoon character urinating on a symbol that represents fallen cops.

"It's absolutely despicable," a resident said.

And inside a hearing room filled to capacity Tuesday night, Fanale was the only person who didn't show up.

"I cannot tell you how appalled I am by the actions and the outright cowardice that he's not here after creating such an uproar," a speaker said.

He never heard the parade of dozens of speakers calling for him to resign, but it seems he got the message.
