Couple sees 'Hamilton' after son's medical emergency disrupted plans

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- It can be hard for parents to balance working and finding time for each other.

"If we go out to the grocery store together, it's special. Or if we go out to a pizza joint and just grab a quick bite to eat, we cherish those moments because they don't occur very often," Tim Lorencovitz said.

One family had an emergency that got in the way of their date night on Broadway, and when they couldn't get a refund, they asked 7 On Your Side for help.

Lorencovitz wanted to surprise his wife, Jen, for her birthday.

"And Hamilton is obviously one of the very popular shows. So my thought was, Hey, this is great, let's see what I can do if I can get these tickets," he said.

They don't get to celebrate much because of their difficult situation.

Back in 2014, their son Noah suffered a heart attack in middle school when he was just 13 years old.

"He lost his ability to walk, lost his ability to talk, his ability to eat by mouth," Lorencovitz's wife, Jennifer, said.

For the last decade, Noah has required around-the-clock care.

The whole family steps in to help out.

Even a few hours out of the house has to be scheduled far in advance.

The day they were seeing Hamilton on Broadway was the perfect opportunity to step out for a few hours.

"It's hard to get coverage in nursing even for them, just because of the timing it was almost ideal," Lorencovitz said.

But just before heading out for their special date night, instead of leaving Parsippany, they were in the driveway waiting for an ambulance.

Noah had gotten sick and had to be transferred to the Emergency Room for double pneumonia and COVID.

Reselling their Broadway tickets was the last thing on their mind.

"We would have given anything to, to go on a date that night, but, of course, wanted to be in the hospital with our son," Jennifer said.

When Lorencovitz reached out to the theater company, he couldn't get refunded or rescheduled.

"You're just going to be on a wait list. And if the opportunity arises, we'll reach out to you. So that was the extent of it, and we may not be able to go even if the tickets are available," Lorencovitz said.

They thought the show was over, but 7 On Your Side reached out to their ticket seller, explaining the story and hours later, they were reimbursed.

"It was just it's it's such a simple thing but so important to us," Jennifer said.

Ticketmaster immediately issued a refund of $476.

"We fight for enough things for our son, for us and it was another hassle we didn't have to worry about," Lorencovitz said.

The couple was able to reschedule their date night and finally see Hamilton on Broadway.
